Planning a destination wedding is no small feat, but when I look back at how every detail of my dream day came to life, I can’t help but feel a mix of pride, gratitude, and pure joy. As someone based in South Africa, pulling together a wedding miles away was a journey filled with spreadsheets, vision boards, video calls, and a good dose of determination. But every late night, every revised PowerPoint presentation, and every email was worth it.

Here’s how my dream wedding went from an idea on paper to the most spectacular day of my life - and why I might just have what it takes to become a destination wedding planner myself!

The Vision: A Beachside Dream

For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamt of exchanging vows by the ocean. There’s something magical about the waves, the salty breeze, and the golden hues of a sunset over water. The first step was finding the perfect venue - a beachside gem that not only fit my aesthetic vision but also made logistical sense for our guests. After hours of research and virtual tours, I found the one.

The venue set the tone, and from there, every detail started falling into place.

The Power of Partnership

One of the most beautiful parts of this journey is having a partner who shared the same vision for our big day. From the moment we started planning, we leaned into each other’s strengths, using them to turn our dream into a magical life moment. Whether it was bouncing ideas off each other, reviewing every detail together, or splitting responsibilities to make the process seamless, this wedding was as much a testament to our teamwork as it was to our love.

When I felt overwhelmed by logistics, my partner stepped in with calm logic and solutions. When they needed inspiration, I came in with creative energy. Together, we didn’t just plan a wedding; we crafted a moment that felt like us - a celebration of love, connection, and everything we stand for as a couple.

Months of Preparation: Excel Sheets and Video Calls

Planning a wedding from another country meant becoming hyper-organised. I lived on Excel sheets - tracking budgets, guest lists, vendor bookings, and timelines. Every aspect of the wedding had its own tab. Every conversation with a vendor was followed up with detailed notes and checklists.

Video calls became my lifeline. From planning meetings with my event coordinators to interviews with photographers and makeup artists, I relied on technology to connect the dots. It was overwhelming at times, but also rewarding to see the puzzle pieces start to fit together.

Bringing the PowerPoint to Life

Yes, I had a PowerPoint presentation. Actually, I had several. Each slide represented a piece of my vision - colour palettes, decor inspiration, table settings, florals, and mood boards for every moment of the day. My wedding planners and I used these presentations to ensure we were on the same page. And let me tell you, seeing it all come to life was nothing short of magical.

From the grand floral arch at the altar to the intricate details of the table arrangements, every element was exactly as I had envisioned - or better.

The A-Team Behind the Magic

No wedding comes together without the right people. I was fortunate to have an incredible team and family beside me:

World-Class Photography: Capturing every moment beautifully was non-negotiable. My photographer didn’t just meet expectations - they exceeded them. Every shot was breathtaking and told the story of the day perfectly.

The Perfect Planners: My wedding planners were the backbone of this operation. They took my spreadsheets, vision boards, and PowerPoint presentations and turned them into reality, ensuring everything went off without a hitch.

Our Amazing Brother as MC: There’s nothing like having someone you trust lead the proceedings. Our MC brought energy, humor, and heart to the day, making it feel even more personal and memorable.

Best-in-Class Hair and Makeup Artists: I wanted to look and feel my best, and my hair and makeup team delivered in every way. They were professional, talented, and made the getting-ready process a joy.

A Seamless Celebration

On the day of the wedding, everything flowed effortlessly. From the moment I walked down the aisle to the sound of the ocean to the lively reception filled with love and laughter, it felt like living in a dream. Every detail, every idea, and every thought I had poured into planning was there in front of me, brought to life in the most splendid way.

The Takeaway: A Newfound Passion

After all the effort I put into planning this wedding, I realised something—I might just have a knack for destination wedding planning. The process wasn’t easy, but it taught me so much about organisation, communication, and the magic of bringing a vision to life. Who knows? Maybe this experience is the beginning of a new adventure! Having a partner who shared my vision and contributed equally to this journey made it even more special. Together, we created a day that reflected not just our love, but also our ability to work together as a team.

Planning our dream destination wedding was one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. It took time, effort, and an incredible team to make it happen, but standing there at the beachside, surrounded by love, made every moment worth it.

To anyone considering a destination wedding: don’t be afraid to dream big. With enough planning, the right people by your side, and a partner who shares your vision, your dream can absolutely come to life. Together, you can create not just a wedding, but a memory that lasts forever.
